I write today to thank you for your generous commitment to financial aid at Harvard Medical School through your support of the Paul Farmer, MD ’88 PhD ’90 Memorial Scholarship Fund. I’m pleased to share a profile of this year’s recipient, John Jachimiak, a Pathways student in the Class of 2028 whose commitment to health equity is reflected in his care and advocacy for patients experiencing homelessness.
Our financial aid program is an embodiment of our core belief that cost should never be a barrier to attending Harvard Medical School. Your support of the Paul Farmer Scholarship Fund is a powerful expression of this commitment.

Path to Medicine
John grew up in a single‑parent household where his mother never had the chance to pursue higher education. That experience, along with early nonprofit and community work, shaped his commitment to serve under‑resourced communities and patients experiencing homelessness. Since starting medical school, he has deepened that commitment and hopes to be a physician–community partner who improves outcomes for unhoused patients through excellent surgical care and thoughtful follow‑up.
Training & Development
At HMS, John leads a foot clinic at Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program through the Crimson Care Collaborative, guiding fellow students in foot washing and basic foot exams for clients. He also works in the Trauma Research Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, publishing on readmissions among traumatically injured patients experiencing homelessness. These experiences keep him closely connected to people in Boston who are experiencing homelessness and inform research that looks for practical ways to ease suffering and make care safer, more consistent, and more respectful for patients after injury and surgery, bridging the gap between the clinic, the hospital, and life after discharge.
Access & Opportunity
Scholarship support shapes John’s experience at HMS by allowing him to remain financially independent and fully present in his training. It frees him to devote his time and energy to service and patient‑centered work rather than constant financial strain. He believes financial support opens HMS to students who might not otherwise pursue medicine and that donors strengthen the profession by bringing diverse trainees into the field. As he approaches graduation nearly debt‑free, he carries deep gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility to give back.
