The Scholars in Medicine (SiM) program allows students at Harvard Medical School to perform a longitudinal, mentored, scholarly project with faculty members. Since 2011, HMS has required every student to complete a SiM project. The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine mentors students in global health, medical social sciences, and humanities. Dr. Vijay Sankaran supervised two recent SiM projects:
Dr. Michael Pang, MD ’25, led “Probing Hematopoietic Dynamics of TP53 Mutations Using CRISPR/Cas9 Base-Editor Screens.” He writes, “This technique will be able to seamlessly translate to investigating other genes implicated in clonal hematopoiesis.”
Sanjana Shah (Class of 2026) tackled the “Role of MECOM in Acute Myeloid Leukemia Chemotherapy Sensitivity.” She notes, “By understanding the association of the dysregulation of the MECOM transcriptional network with chemoresistance, the aim of this project is to uncover vulnerabilities in acute myeloid leukemia that can be the targets of novel therapeutics.”
